Day 25 Ramadhan - Stay at Home

Self-Study Today: Post about Compost

I've done sufficient research on "how to make a compost for a small space house with no lawn or mown, odorless and wormless for a start", fuhh that's a long description~

Anything to reduce my waste and help the environment, not to mention free natural fertilizer.

5 main ingredients to have a successful compost:
1) brown materials act as carbon
2) green materials act as nitrogen providing nutrients
3) soil acts as blanket to suppress the stink inside
4) water to cool down the compost
5) air as aerobic that helps break down scraps

4 steps to make a compost:
Step 1 - Prepare a bin with the size of your liking, create holes at the bottom to allow entrance of air.
Step 2 - Layer the ingredients, adjust the depth based on your bin size.
Layer 1 is browns (leaves, shredded cardboard/paper, eggshells, tea bags)
Layer 2 is thin layer of garden soil
Layer 3 is greens (vegetables/fruit peelings, green plant cuttings, any waste food that's not in the don't list)
Layer 4 is thin layer of garden soil
continue alternately brown, soil, green, soil, brown, soil....

Step 3 - After 14 days, check the compost if it's ready to be used. If not, turn the bin upside down to aerate it, or use garden fork moving the drier edge to the center and moist it as you go.
Step 4 - Remember these tips;
-Unless you have a lawn or sufficient amount of worms (maybe), do not add meat, bones, poultry, fish, fatty food waste and dairy products into the compost because these items will slow down the composting process and attract other insects/pests.
- too much greens will result the compost to be slimy and smelly, add more browns.
- too much browns will cause the compost to break down longer, have a balance ratio, it's all about trial and error.
Let's start experimenting!
