Day 28 Ramadhan - Stay at Home

"Reading gives us somewhere to go when we have to stay where we are"

Self-Study Today: Speed Reading

B: What are you learning today?
A: Finishing my course at Udemy about speed reading.

B: What's there to learn about it? I can flip through books, does that count?
A: Anyone can read very fast if they want, but it takes proper practice to store the memory of what we speed read. Don't you want to have the memory like Sherlock Holmes or Jack Reacher?

B: Right, so how do we do it?
A: Since I'm still learning, I'll just tell you the short version of this course.

Firstly, practice improving our memory by picturing those information, the more detailed the better, best to have some connections or any personal experience with it. For example, when I read about the Great Wall of China, I pictured the Mulan cartoon part where they light the fire at the watchtower.

Secondly, practice creating mental markers around 2 words per paragraph, make sure the related article has markers between each paragraphs that can connect with each other. This is so that we can link them, creating story for long term memory.

Thirdly, pre-read with curiosity before you read to get a good idea of what to expect. Look for titles, sub-headings, proper nouns, numbers, odd words. Along the way you can get an idea of what markers to create.

Lastly, speed read with the third, second and first steps above all combined. Read with your eyes, taking words as symbols instead of reading with your inner voice. Remember to time your reading, let's say how many seconds per page. After that, evaluate how much you can remember correctly with the speed you're reading. Over time, try to go faster and faster.

B: Wow, the way you put it, sounds mind blowing. Hearing it already made me feel exhausted.
A: Push yourself to your limits, that's how you truly grow.
